Dr. Shankar MahadevanAssociate Professor
Bio
Dr. Shankar Mahadevan is a Ph.D. holder from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, specialising in Cinema Studies. He is a teaching faculty and researcher with 9 years of experience in Journalism, Media Studies, and Film Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels of various universities and media institutes. He has industry experience in media practices including print, visual, and broadcast communication and advertising for 10 years and more.
Dr. Shankar Mahadevan has Published 2 fictional works and co-authored 2 books on film and drama studies, in Malayalam language. He has produced visual programmes and documentaries on various topics including media studies and socio-political history of Keralam. He has also published articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as magazines, books and online media. His research areas of interest include Cinema, Media Studies, and Cultural History. Before joining MIT WPU, Dr. Shankar was a faculty member with academic institutions including Delhi University, Ambedkar University Delhi, and Amity University Mumbai, and was the director of the Institute of Communication, Kerala Media Academy. He has worked with Akashvani, The New Indian Express Group of Publications and United News of India, as a newsperson. He also had a stint as a copywriter with advertising firms including Concept Advertising.
Dr. Shankar is currently working on a book on the emergence of Tamil talkies in the 1930s and another book on the visual style of the renowned South Indian cinematographer and film director A. Vincent. He was part of a team that organised national and international seminars and events including International Press Photo Festival of Kerala (IPPFK) in March 2018 at Thiruvananthapuram, National Seminar on Media Perspectives in April 2018, New Delhi and National Seminar and Media History Tour (Madhyama Charithra Yathra) on the History of the Evolution of Media in the state of Kerala, organized by Kerala Media Academy in 2019.
